Lavatory. Japanese tansu with granite top and brass vessel The Japanese tansu pictured to the right is entirely new cabinetry built in Seattle. It is constructed of solid vertical grain Douglas Fir and veneer plywood, then assembled with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. Highly adaptable to many uses, this was originally designed to house a 50-inch wide screen flat panel television, multi-media components, speakers and media storage. Japanese kiri wood tansu adapted to built-in use Here an antique Chinese sceen has been fitted to a contemporary stand of welded steel and glass shelves. The result is a piece that retains the architectural feel of the original screen (without any modification of the antique. The bathroom lavatory on the left is an example of the first. An antique Japanese tansu was adapted by adding a Brazilian granite counter top and a brass urli from India. The tansu required an insert to be built for the interior (to add rigidity and strength to support the granite top). The urli was modified to fit the granite top and the plumbing. 
Contemporary Japanese tansu. Custom built in Seattle Similar units have been built to accomodate wardrobe, home office and libraries. Pricing is contingent upon size, materials and specifications for the interior. This is an example of an existing cabinet (in this case, an antique Japanese kiri tansu) that has been adapted to new use. Traditionally a three-piece stacking tansu, the sections here are placed side-by-side within a custom framework of vertical grain Douglas Fir and trimmed with cedar.
